Most years in March our Johnson County Ducks Unlimited Committee gets together after our annual fundraiser to unwind with a controlled hunt on one of Kansas’ many excellent game preserves. We typically reciprocate with organizations that support our chapter, and Muddy Creek Game Birds, out of Meriden, Kansas, has been just such a supporter, for a number of years now.
We spent a gorgeous spring morning walking CRP for pheasants and Chukar partridge. Our group of seven shooters managed to get most of our birds, somewhere in the range of 30-something out of 40, with the three labs putting in some work.
I did something I’ve always wanted to do, but never done – I did not even bring a gun. I shot entirely with the Canon. The challenge of getting a good rooster rise over the dogs or gun barrel is something I’ve not yet nailed, and thought this might be an excellent opportunity to try. Still not totally dialed in – I did not “nail it” today, either, but did get some decent shots.
