May 25, 2021: Cancun – Nichupte Lagoon Tarpon

After being blown out of our offshore trip, visions of marlin and tuna and sailfish and more no longer dancing in my head, I turned my attention to our lagoon trip – I was still very much in search of Mr. Tarpon, and his friends, of course. We had a pretty tough morning as far as the fishing went. Previous several days’ weather seemed to have the lagoon shut down. Enjoyed sight-fishing the tight canals for rolling tarpon; was pretty cool – just not many takers. We did manage a few trout, a couple snook, and… yes. I did in fact finally get that tarpon. I’ll continue to pursue a larger one, but it’s something I’ve always wanted to catch, and it was every bit the fight I expected it to be, especially on light tackle. Thanks to Dustin for capturing it on video.

Captain Mauricio was knowledgeable, and Martin with Cancun Tarpon Fishing was great, easy to work with, and very conveniently located. I’d recommend them for a an easy trip that doesn’t cut into your other Cancun activities, can get in and out, have a great time, without disrupting your vacation.
