Saturday, November 14: Duck & Goose Hunting, Atchison, KS
Saturday was pretty slow. Forecast assured me we’d not have the wind concerns of last weekend. But warm weather – stretching far north – would likely not see many new birds finding their way to us. There are not many days in any of our spots where we do not at least SEE something, off in the distance, somewhere… This was not just a goose egg, a skunk, no birds down… we saw nary a feather from any huntable species.
Gorgeous weather, however, made it a rather comfortable morning for hanging out, spending time with friends, and watching a very nice buck close within 80 yards or so of our duck blind.
Sunday, November 15: Duck & Goose Hunting, Spring Hill, KS
Sunday was going to be fun – regardless of birds. My daughter and her friend were coming out to the duck blind. I cherish every moment I can get like this. And the added bonus was that my son dropped in unexpectedly from college for the weekend, and he, too, wanted to come along. A very rare opportunity. Ducks mattered very little to me at this point.
Thanks to Nick for an excellent blind breakfast of pancakes and sausage. That, along with a perfectly adorable and sweet puppy who likes to make sure I never run out of opportunities to click my shutter, and the simple joy of being with your children and closest friends… the conversation, stories, catching up… just made for an amazing morning.
Didn’t actually see a lot of birds. But nobody seemed too worried about that – especially me. A couple ducks and a lone goose were simply icing on the cake at the point.
