Scotland Day 10: Rain, Ruins & the Road Back East

The day started early; rain on the windshield, mist on the lochs… A hush in the air.

Skye was fading behind us, and the mainland waited – wild, wet, still half-asleep.

Then – Eilean Donan.

There it stood in the soft gray light where three lochs meet. A castle so timeless it looked like it might be dreaming. Stone dark with history, wrapped in cloud, framed by still water and drifting rain. We saw it early. And we saw it right. No crowds. Just us, the weather, and one of Scotland’s most enduring sights.

We lingered longer than planned. Cameras clicking. Hearts quiet. A farewell to Skye… and, in a way, a farewell to Scotland.

As we drove on up to Inverness, I kept telling my daughter to watch the hills – keep looking for red stag. We’d seen plenty at a distance, but not the one. The kind you hope for.

Out of nowhere, she said, “Dad… I think I got one.”

I wasn’t sure. Not until later. Not until I zoomed way in.

And there it was – high on the ridge, nearly hidden. A big red stag, barely visible unless you’re looking closely. Majestic. Still. Perfect. Waiting in the last frame of this gallery like a secret Scotland saves for those who pay attention.

A reminder that even in the rain…
this country still shows off.
