Scotland Day 9: Skye, Scotch & A Walk Through Faerie Waters

Lower Breakish greeted us with its quiet rhythm – a cozy Airbnb perched on the edge of a salt marsh, where the tide writes its own poetry across the land. It was just Abby and me now, and our Skye chapter began with exactly the kind of day you hope for and never quite expect.

First stop: Talisker Distillery in Carbost. Where the hills press close, the sea laps just beyond the barrels, and the air smells like peat and promise.

The tour? Phenomenal. The whisky? Game-changing. I’ve always liked Scotch – but now? Talisker has my allegiance. Forever. There’s something about standing where the spirit is made, feeling the Atlantic wind as you sip something born of earth, sea, and time. It’s not just tasting – it’s belonging.

From there, we carried that fire into the hills, chasing it west toward the Fairie Pools. A hike through storybook terrain – icy blue waterfalls, rocky stream crossings, and the jagged Cuillins keeping watch from above. The water was so clear, so cold, it felt like it belonged in another world.

And to finish the day? Port Ruighe – or Portree – Skye’s little harbor jewel. Pastel buildings hugging the water, boats bobbing, cafés glowing in the twilight.

We wandered a bit. Took it in. Let the day settle like a good dram – slow, warm, and full of flavor. From salt marsh sunrise to whisky, waterfalls, and a harbor sunset – Day 9 gave us Skye in full color.
