FEBRUARY 15, 2015: “Regular” Season Finale

It was, indeed, the final day of our “regular” waterfowl season.  However, I quote “regular” – as someone on my Facebook page pointed out – there was absolutely nothing “regular” or normal about this season. Again, an unusually erratic (I know, we are in Kansas, where erratic IS the norm, blah blah blah…) – but this was definitely a unique season in terms of weather. At least this year we were in position to have an outstanding early season on geese, and still mixed in some excellent days among some of the slower stretches.

Today, though, I really did not think I’d be getting out. I honestly thought yesterday was it. With not much flying and some severe weather, the crew was not sounding very optimistic about getting out. We deferred to the morning, and the old “play it by ear” – which meant I’d get up anyway and drive around scouting.

I did this, and really did not turn up much. Along with reports from other groups that not much was happening, I decided I’d wait a bit and come back out for a mid-day look – which did turn into a 3-4 hour hunt. We had one nice group finish outside of the decoys, and managed a few birds from that to give us a scent-free (no skunk!) ending to the season.
